Here are four descriptive statements rejected by the Left for these two mutually reinforcing reasons.

1. People are not basically good.

Leftists tend to reject this because a) it is too painful to accept, and b) it undermines the leftist dogma that people do bad because of outside forces — poverty, capitalism, racism, etc.

2. Men and women are inherently different.

Leftists have rejected this idea because some of the differences are too emotionally upsetting to accept. Men are variety-driven by nature? Too upsetting. Women may have less yearning for, and ability in, math and engineering? Only a sexist like former Harvard president Lawrence Summers would say such a thing. Moreover, the belief that men and women are inherently different violates the Left's foundational principle of equality. Many liberals admit that they reject talk of male-female differences because it can easily lead to gender inequality.

3. Black males disproportionately commit violent crime in America.

Leftist reactions to this truly painful fact are to label one who notes it a racist and to decry American society as racist because there are more black males in prison than in college.

4. The United Nations is a moral wasteland.

Since before the U.N.'s founding in 1945, liberals placed much of their hope for a peaceful world in the United Nations. That the U.N. has turned out to be an abettor more than a preventer of violence is a fact that the Left finds too painful to acknowledge. And it violates the left-wing belief that nationalism is evil and internationalism is the solution.

It is generally believed that as people grow older. they reject much of the liberalism they believed in when they were young. This is true, and one reason is relevant here: As we get older, we tend to make peace with painful faits de la vie.

This man does NOT speak for me, as a liberal. This is the kind of claptrap that GOP lemmings read and accept as 'fact'. Most of National Review is opinion pieces anyway, just like this. Dennis Prager is a shill for the GOP in the worst possible way. What a load of HOOEY this article is (mindful of COH or I'd call it what it really is).

It's good to know where the other side is coming from. In this case, the other side of coming from an orifice best observed sitting on a commode.

while presented poorly, it is an interesting discussion. let's take #'s 2 and 3 as they are in the same vein.

do you believe that the outcomes (less women in technical careers and more blacks in jail) are the result of external societal influences (poverty, racism, sexism, rigged systems, etc) or the result of the fact that men and women are indeed different and more blacks commit crime? is it a mix of the factors?

most of what I see on the vine (a liberal bastion, I think we can agree there) is that it is societal influences that give these outcomes. men and women are equal and to say otherwise is just wrong. i also see this especially with the blacks in jail thing. i hear how society is rigged against them and any notion that they possibly commit more of the crimes is dismissed as nonsense.

I don't agree with the way it was brought up as i don't think its a liberal mindset but where do you stand on these issues?

Prof, thank you for your well-considered comments.

I would say that some, but not all, liberals would agree with you just as some conservatives would on this subject.

Women and men are wired differently. As a liberal, I admit that. But we are all humans and as such have different capabilities. It's not a good thing or a bad thing.

As for blacks committing more violent crime, if the numbers show that is the case then I wouldn't argue those numbers. As a liberal, I'd want to know why this is true and how it can be changed. Conservatives, from my experience, just accept that blacks must somehow be more violent than whites which is nonsense. Blacks don't always have advantageous circumstances in which to grow and that leads to violence oftentimes regardless of race.

Lecture over! ;)

OMG is this man still talking? He was the speaker at my college graduation and had 7 points of something or another...he got to about #3, lost his place, asked where he was and several of us yelled out "7" -- we just wanted our damn piece of paper, not a three hour speech!! Just do like I did that day...tune him out!

both sides have mouthpieces that are shills for their respective positions and should be treated as such

A very Christian Conservative relative gave his son a subscription to the print National Review. His brilliant son decided the perfect compliment was a gift of a years membership in the ACLU. (I check in on the NR on line for defensive purposes.) Good post. Mindless article!

If he is accurate about his points then it is safe to assume that the writer is an evil SOB, intentionally sowing fear and hatred in order to keep the people, who have the power, from coming together to use it effectively. So he and his ilk can continue to take advantage and profit from the tumult.

Yes, Sebby, too many people want to accept this man's 'principles' because it is easier than thinking for themselves or doing their own research. That is what makes him dangerous.

National Review is so full of... Opinion pieces.... I wouldn't use it to line my catbox as it would already be 'full'.
